These are some of the journals that I read as I was deciding if I wanted
to hike the trail, and as I was planning my trip. This first section,
though, are links to people I was on the trail with.
Yogi
(http://www.trailjournals.com/journals2.cfm?trailname=723)
You can also check out her home page for all her hikes: www.trailjournals.com/yogi
Yogi and I hiked together a lot, especially during exciting sections.
Happy 'JO'
Happy JO and I have had some good trail time together.
Gottago
(http://www.lindajeffers.com)
I've really enjoyed the sections I hiked with Gottago.
DLow
(http://www.trailjournals.com/d-low's2002pctjournal)
DLow's a character.
Rachel &
Scott
(http://www.geocities.com/pct_hike/)
I've never actually met them. We leapfrogged. The PCT is part of their
honeymoon.
Black
Hawk & Strawberry Girl
(http://www.pcthiker.com/pages/journals/2002/hawkgirl.shtml)
Lots of visits and hiking with relatives. I liked hiking with Blackhawk
and Strawberry Girl. We walked. We talked. We laughed. We ate.
Scooter
(Dan McGuire)
I hiked with Scooter early on and at the end, kind of like a Scooter sandwich.
Mags
(http://friends.backcountry.net/pmags/)
I didn't hike with Mags a lot, and only in Southern California.
Tangent
(http://meinfelder.com)
I didn't hike with Tangent at all. We met in Big Bear, and that was it.
Go to his archive and look for 4/02 through 09/02 to catch his PCT journal.
Iron Chef
(http://www.myfeethurt.com)
Iron Chef and I met early on and leapfrogged through most of California.
Then he was off like a rocket.
British
Bed Bug -"Bug"
Saw Bug in town at Idlywild and Etna, then in Northern Oregon. We finished
together. Now he's home in London.
Donk/Phil
(http://www.cse.unsw.edu.au/~philp/pct/)
Last saw the Australian Phil near Big Bear. He did the PCT in a month
less than I did.
Don &
Leslie
(http://home.att.net/~pctdavidson/)
Don and Leslie were role models of doing the PCT on your own terms. They
started early, hiked low-mile (15-18) days, took only a few zero-mile
days, and finished.

Simply
Seeking (2001)
A good read, and I can't tell you why without spoiling one of the more
enjoyable aspects.
Menacing Vegetables
(2000)
A multiple-person journal with a good style, lots of humor, and a right-there-with-them
kind of read. Except you can't be with them, and you KNOW the journal
is just a glimpse at the fun. The Menacing Vegetables had a stated goal
of hiking the PCT without finishing it.
Yogi
in 2001
(http://www.trailjournals.com/journals2.cfm?autonumber=2901)
Yogi had to get off the trail in 2001. The journal, including getting
off the trail, is a great read.
Margo
(1999?)
Learned about the importance of preparations and potential challenges.
Hobbit
(?)
A day-by-day description of the trail, as I recall. I think he's done
it S->N & N->S, or at least has journals for both trips.
Henry
Shires (1999?)
I think this is the correct URL. He moved his site at some point. Henry
turned 40 on the trail, and provided inspiration for me to do the same.
Brian
Robinson (2001)
I think this is the correct URL. Brian did the PCT as part of a successful
completion of a calendar year triple crown (the PCT, the Appalachian Trail,
and the Continental Divide Trail). Brian turned 40 on the trail. That,
and other fairly obvious aspects of his trip, inspired me.
Nick Brown (2001)
Great photos and a surprise ending make Nick's Long Walk an interesting
site.
Nacona
and Bald Eagle (2000)
The trials and tribulations of a thru-hike. Also the pros and cons of
paired hiking. She/They are gearing up for a 2003 thru-hike. Look for
their 2003 journal on pcthiker.com.
Tahoma
and Gezelle (1998)
A great journal about hiking in an El Niño year. I was thinking
of them while Yogi and I were hiking in snow. We had it easy compared
to Tahoma and Gezelle.
